Canoeing Classes and Workshops:
You can read all the canoeing tips and tricks you can get your hands on, but sometimes the best way to learn is by doing. If you want a little hands-on, in-person guidance before you head out on your own, there are endless opportunities awaiting you. Outdoor gear stores, canoe associations, and outdoor expos are all great places to look for classes and workshops. Professional paddling schools often have novice and beginner-level courses, and it’s also a good idea to check with your local park district or University outdoor program for classes open to the general public. For tips on where to get started in your search, check out gear stores, outdoor expos and paddling schools near you.

This whirlwind, hands-on workshop covers most everything a Scouter needs to know about canoeing in a wild region where help is an airplane ride away.  Topics include planning a trip—maps and aerial photos; vehicle and trailer concerns; navigation with map, compass and GPS; canoe selection and outfitting; essential tripping gear, packing and portaging; signals and communications; storm proofing your camp; essential knots and hitches; rigging rain tarps; menus and food preparation; critter-proofing your camp; making fire in the rain; and more!  It’s all geared towards guiding Scouters on canoe trips beyond the beaten path.

The training will take place at the Fred C. Andersen Scout Camp in Houlton, WI, (just outside of Stillwater, MN) from 7:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.  Participants are invited to arrive on the evening of Friday, March 26 and stay through the morning of Sunday, March 28.  Camp facilities will be available for those wishing to stay overnight, and an extra program will be offered by Cliff Jacobson on Friday evening from 7:30-8:30. Cost is $175, all meals included. Space is limited. For questions about the event or to register, contact Carolyn Erickson at 651-254-9144 or Email cerickson@nsbsa.org to reserve a spot or to receive a schedule.

In addition to the meals, everyone will receive a copy of two of Cliff’s books -- *Expedition Canoeing, 20th Anniversary Edition, by Cliff Jacobson.  The Globe-Pequot Press 2005.  *Basic Illustrated, Map & Compass, by Cliff Jacobson. The Globe-Pequot Press 2008.
