Feature Stories

mn_miniicon.gif Ely

Ely has always been a distinctly north woods town: first as a mining and logging hub, and today as the gateway to the western BWCAW. With a population of less than 4,000, Ely is bustling in the summertime with some 160,000 visitors a year! The 25 BWCAW entry points lining the Echo Trail and Fernberg Road access all kinds of routes, from the long portage into Angleworm to the long paddle across Lac la Croix. Whether you’re after a fishing license or a soak in a hot tub, a cold milkshake or a visit with a wolf, Ely has abundant resources for before and after your canoe trip.
