I have been to this wonderful canoe area. It’s very nice. Not too crowded, clean and chock full of wildlife and great fishing. Nice car camping too if you don’t want to go into the backcountry.

I second this post! There’s a Canoeing.com section on Sylvania, but not a lot of other information out there. This is one of those parks that we’d love to hear more about — any Trip Logs floating around out there (hint hint — Jack)? Photos? Anybody?

I was there quite a few years ago when I was about 16. It is absolutely beautiful there. The lakes go from clear to blue to green and are amazing to paddle though.

The a few major differences as far as rules and regulations that I read on the Sylvania section of this site. A few I remember area no live bait and you reserve each campsite ahead of time.

We caught some very large largemouth bass while we were there and again. it was beautiful and peaceful.

Yep, my experiences mimic Canadienne’s. I was there last in September 1992. It’s likely gorgeous as we speak…with flame colored maples, good cool nights, nice days, lots and lots of deer. We did a little fishing, and day camping. It’s not very large in area, so it suits the basecamper or fishing canoeist. A serious canoe tripper could paddle all the lakes and do all the ports in a single day. None of the ports are real long, or arduous. Do check the fishing regs because they are not standard Michigan regs as noted. In addition, the hiking is excellent as well.

Great place to visit, Boneli has trip reports and great photos on his personal website for those interested.

My experiences mimic those already posted. Barbless hooks are the big fishing reg. issue there. Daily limits are small too. Loons aplenty, Aggressive Chipmunks, beware. Hang food bag properly or they will get into it. I left an empty soft vinyl water bucket out a few hours and it was knawed through in 2 places.

All sites are first come 1st served. A new entry station was built 3 years ago. So if you fondly remember the old “A” Framed hut, it’s no longer used. I always was able to get the interior campsites I wanted. Added bonus – I always met the nicest people there paddling through. You can car camp and paddle most of the park in one go, but I recommend taking a few days and enjoy this little treasure.

Sorry no photos. All my SW pics are from an old school 35mm camera. And dang if I can even find those…

Barry’s link that you have posted here works, PK.

I know he is losing his web hosting from ccr however after the sale of the site.

Been to Sylvania annually for the past 15 years. It’s a great spot for all paddlers. The beginner will find a nice drive in 48 site campground to launch day trips. The more experienced will find 50 wilderness sites spread across 8 lakes all connected by a trail system.
There is a resort on Crooked Lake and motor boats are allowed on it, the rest of the lakes are paddle only. Leave your sail rigs and portage carts at home, they are not allowed
The whole wilderness area is just over 18,000 acres. You can find a map here.

I have since re-done my web page and removed some old pages. Reference to Syvania got replaced by Canadian trips.

    Sorry.

Please contact me if you have any questions about Sylvania and I’ll see if I can help you.
