The Boundary Waters Fire
Pagami Creek Fire Updates
Updated: October 27, 2011
On August 18, 2011 a fire was started by lighting on the Ely side of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It stayed managable until September 12 when high winds fanned the flames into a massive blaze. On September 20 the fire was estimated at 93,000 acres in size. The fire is now listed at at least 93% contained, and remains primarily within the area designated as 'wilderness.' Within the wilderness areas, the fire is allowed to take a natural course -- it is being actively managed and fought where it threatens private property. As a precaution, many of the entry points into the BWCAW were closed. Firefighters are entering the roadless area by canoe and airplane to help manage the blaze. To keep Canoeing.com readers up to date, we are compiling some of the many news stories, maps, photos and reports here, check back often as the fire progresses.
