Traveling in West Virginia by Canoe

According to Google Maps, it’s a three-hour drive from Moundsville, West Virginia to the state capitol in Charleston.  According to Mountain State canoeists Bryant Persinger and Ronnie Howe, the trip can also be calculated as an 8-day paddle.

The retired miners and former high school classmates, as the Charleston Daily Mail reports HERE, finally paddled from their hometown to Charleston after canoeing together on various trips in Canada.  On the 180-mile paddle down the Ohio river from Moundsville and then up the Kanawha River from Henderson to Charleston, the pair averaged 25 miles a day.

Campsites were the biggest challenge for the 60-something paddlers, since most of the land along the two rivers is privately held.  The pair’s campsites included an island in the Ohio River, beneath a railroad trestle, and on the lawn of a host family.
