please chim in not bein nozy just curious what everybody else is paddling...I've always rented or borrowed but we finally got our own canoe and we love it.. Got a 1998 SWIFT Kipawa for 500.00 the dude only used it a couple times, oh it was faded (light blue) and the wood was really dryed out but i have since cleaned this puppy up and we are just having a wonderful time paddling it WOW is it fast too us...
Well it will end up being the one we loan out to friends and family to use because im already dreamin of my new swift dumoine or BELL yellowstone tandem gotta have a GREEN royalex canoe just not to sure how durable the (expedition kevlar) i think its supposed to be 54#'s and when i talked to mr. swift on the phone thats what he figured it should be... well
besides the huron river we also frequent the sturgeon river up in cheboygan county mi and them rocks and logs come up really fast hehe
im kinda looking for someone to let me know if i should worry so much cause i have no knowledge about my swift!?!?
thanks

Your kevlar boat is perfect for MI rivers...provided you have the skills where you're not bashing into every rock in the river :-) and aren't dragging it through boney shallow water. It's plenty tough and Swift's expedition lay-up is very strong. Enjoy paddling it.

I got my first canoe last July while we were vacationing in the UP near Marquette. It's an Old Town 14'-7" Guide. It's flat bottom makes it perfect for exploring the shallow river behind the house. But it's not an able vessel out on Superior. So I keep it close to the shore and basicaly it's just a big beach toy on the lake. Eventualy I plan to get another canoe that will be capable of day trips to Grande Island or tours along the Pictured Rocks.

glad to see you posted up 62 views im still wondering what them lurkers are paddling!?!? just be nice to get this website rollin down the river with some chatty paddlers..I just found the forum this morning and registered. I agree, discussion boards are for just that, discussion! This looks like the makings of a very good forum. I hope it doesn't fall into the pitfall of a "reading room!" I belong to a welding and metalworking forum and believe me, there is nothing more disappointing than posting photos of your projects and getting 200 views but only 2 replys. We call it the reading room syndrome!
BTW, you canoe sure sounds sweet!

I received an 17' Old Town Canadienne from my father for my college graduation and absolutely love this boat. It is a painted (white) Kevlar that is stable, smooth and very fast. I'm not sure on the exact weight, but it is plenty light and an ease to portage.

I paddled an Old Towne Guide 147 for a couple of years...loved that boat....solid as a plank for casting and moving around in and the damn thing could take a poundin on rocks and never show it. Came to a sad realization that my regular trippin partners weren't interested in doing as many trips as I was so if I wanted to get on the water I would have to go solo to get my "fix". The Old Towne at 74lbs was just a little too heavy for one guy to be portin around with a pack load of gear and not seaworthy enough (read low gunwales) to be crossin larger lakes in wind and wave...so I sold it to one of my regular trippin partners:D... I picked up a "Holy Cow" canoe last November...15' prospector in kevlar, at 50 lbs much better suited to my needs.....it is a tandem but serves me well on solo trips....it isn't a particularly fast boat which is fine by me as I tend to be more of a "relaxed, slow and easy" style of paddler anyway....its got great stability for casting and handles the wind and wave very well...I used it to "canoe surf" up in Georgian Bay this summer...paddle out through the breakers then turn in a trough and ride the 4 foot swells back in...what a frickin hoot!!!!!!!!!! The best thing about this boat is it got me off of my paper pushin a$$ and out on the water where I want to be!

We have two canoes. The first was a birthday present to my wife from her parents about a dozen years ago. A 17 foot Old Town Penobscot. That thing has done countless BWCA trips including two moose hunts. It sure does take abuse and just trucks right along.
The second is a canoe built for my by my dad, Dan Strootman. It is his 18 foot model. Wood canvas. It is a heavy boat but it paddles oh so nice. I paddled it in the BWCA again this summer and it routinely handled me, one or two of my kids AND my dog AND gear.
I'll try to find a pic of it on our computer to show it off.

OneBadApple,
I can not comment of the model of canoe, but I can say Swift's expiditoin kevlar is robustly built, light and very tough.

dave s. yes sir i concur with the rest of these fellas that 18 footer is bad to the bone!!!!!
brammy thanx for the second on my expedition kevlar bein tough enuff....
its funny we bought the kipawa in trenton mi and when we went to look at it i had no idea what a swift kevlar canoe was well its butt ugly in a chic color powder blue but after already putting 14 shorter than one full day paddles on her we have broke in the hull as now it has the squigly lines of a city road map on the bottom!!!! and all is well with it come to think of it as tough as its turned out to be we feel like we got the deal of the day @ 500.00 for it with all the fun we've had..now looking at it i believe it when the guy said its only been camping twice and paddled on small lakes...

Hi Dave S,
Yes, folks, Dave's dad does nice work.
Dave, isn't his 18 ft'ers the White Guide? It's been a while so I'm not sure. Either way, nice boats.

This is officially my first post on the forums.
I proudly paddle a 16' Souris River Red Tiger Kevlar canoe. Small enough for me to solo paddle and car-top by myself, but big enough for my friend and I to take our Boundary Waters trips in. I bought it a year and a half ago...and I still think that buying a canoe is the best decision I have ever made.

Thanks bad apple... my handle started out as a joke....then a friend of mine made me a t-shirt that said Paddletramp...and now it's my email address too!
And the tiger is pretty cool...when I went to buy it (I purchased it in Ely, Minnesota) I was going to get the same version of the canoe but without the Tiger Stripes because they cost extra (they are these cool black pin-stripes imbedded into the red kevlar), but the weekend I bought it was a Festival weekend, and they had a promotion that you could upgrade to the Tiger version for free. They have nothing to do with the performance of the canoe of course, but it sure looks cool when the sun shines through it!

Here is a close-up pic of my Souris River canoe with the tiger stripes...it is upside down on the T-bar of my truck. Can't wait to get the canoe out of the garage and into the water. I like Winter and the things it has to offer...but I gotta admit...it is starting to wear on me.

OBA it's been a while, @ this exact moment I am so ready to paddle I could just about wet myself thinking about it =)
Just may be in the market for a new steed myself, The Old Towns have been great as you know but we have paddled them for years now & due for maybe a upgrade for Captan Morgan & myself. You had a guy lined up wanting to swing a deal on the Bell canoes..... Is that still going?
Really hope to get the paddle wet in a couple/few weeks here, The Sturgeon should be fun with the spring melt-off:D

We have been paddling a Wenonah Aura roylex canoe and it has served us very well. but it has become too heavy for claude (my husband) to carry at 65 pounds. really the canoe is not any heavier he has just gotten older, LOL. So we purchased a Blue water saugeen this past weekend:D. can't wait to get it out on the water.

It is great you have a new canoe to try out...and I am sure I am speaking for many of us....that Spring has just got to get here so we can get out paddling! I live in Minnesota and it snowed the last 3 days and I am just about ready to throw myself off my deck and end it all if Spring doesn't get here soon!
O.K....I won't really throw myself off the deck...but seriously....I can't wait to get the canoe out of the garage and onto a body of water!

~Hi All!
Figured I'd chime in instead of being a lookie lou(sp?). :) I've been canoeing the Sioux River in SD for about 7 years. Just started getting back into it heavily in the past year when I acquired my father's canoe. Now I don't have to look for someone else with a canoe anytime i get the bug! I ride a 14' Rogue River. It gets the job done and I'm really itching to venture out on a weekend trip from Sufu to Canton, SD. Should be a nice relaxing weekend trip when I get around to it. Can't wait for my son to be big enough to be my canoeing buddy.
my buddy dave on my canoe, and buddy john on 2nd canoe :)

I live out west so the rivers are very rocky compared to other places. When i paddle tandem I use a Mad River Explorer Royalex with a full spray skirt. The boat handles well in rougher water and holds plenty of gear.
When paddling solo I use a Kruger Sea Wind which is a deck expedition canoe...sort of a combo sea kayak/canoe. This boat is wonderful, carries a lot of gear, very sea worthy, comfort level is the most of any boat I've paddled and its the toughest production canoe made with 12 layers of kevlar. I do more solo paddling than tandem so this boat gets used the most. If I could figure out how to attach pictures I would.

New member here so I thought I would tell you about my canoes and then ask a question. Most of my paddling is solo. I curently have 2 boats and a new one ordered. The new one on order is a Hemlock Peregrine solo boat in Premium+ lay-up. I also have a Wenonah Vagabond (solo) in Royalex (my knock around fishing boat) and an Old Town Penobscot 16 in Royalex (my tandem at the moment!). I recently soon to be replaced by the Peregrine). I am looking forward (impatiently) for the new Peregrine.
Now my question. I want to replace my Penobscot with a different, lighter tandem. I plan to use it primarily for flatwater tripping (never more than Class I moving water - I portage all others). I want light weight for portages, speed and glide, decent hauling capacity (capable of handling a week long trip for 2), good handling in wind and waves, and good construction. I plan on keeping this boat for a long time! If you could buy any canoe for this purpose what would you purchase and why?

I meant to say I had recently sold a Bell Magic(kev light lay-up to be replaced by the Hemlock Peregrine. I am anxiously awaiting any advice on a new tandem.
